Chicago’s Top 3 Breakfast Spots (According to My Almost Three and Eleven-Year-Old Kids)

Nothing beats breakfast in Chicago on a Saturday morning. After a busy work week, the last thing I want to do is man the griddle early on a weekend. You’ll usually find my kids begging and me giving in (very easily) to breakfast at one of our favorite spots.

Here are my kids’ top three picks for breakfast in the city:

Johnny’s Grill

Located in our neighborhood, Logan Square, at 2545 N Kedzie Blvd., Johnny’s Grill is a greasy spoon classic. Enjoy a ride on the train to Logan Square, then grab a stool at the counter and get ready to fill your bellies. Your kids will be entertained as they watch their breakfast prepared before their eyes. Order a skillet with a side of country-style fried potatoes or the chocolate chip pancakes. Afterwards, burn off some of your easily-earned calories by walking to Play, a fun toy store located just across the square.

Lou Mitchell’s

This classic yet over-the-top breakfast spot has been charming Chicago kids since 1923. Lou Mitchell’s, located downtown at 565 West Jackson Boulevard, boasts the fluffiest jumbo omelets and the biggest waffles in town. The menu and the portions are giant sized. As you wait in line, expect to be treated to Milk Duds, and when you finish that giant breakfast – save room for dessert as you’ll be presented with… ice cream!

Located in the South Loop at 1120 South Michigan Avenue, Yolk is a good breakfast spot to hit before trekking over to spend the day on the Museum Campus. Start with the vitamin rich, freshly squeezed strawberry orange juice. The 7.99 combo is my 11-year-old’s go-to choice and includes two eggs any style, two slices of applewood smoked bacon, two sausage links, and a choice of two pancakes, french toast, or crepes.
