Visit a Home of the Future: The Museum of Science and Industry’s Green and Wired Smart Home

We adore the Museum of Science and Industry. I have been visiting on a regular basis since I was a little girl, and now I am delighted to bring my kids along to experience this one-of-a-kind Chicago museum. Special exhibits mean that there is always something new to discover.

This summer, be sure to check out the Museum of Science and Industry’s Green and Wired Smart Home, which was just recently revamped to include even more cutting edge technology. This is an exhibit that both parents and kids will enjoy.

The Smart Home, at the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago

Located on the museum’s campus, the Smart Home is a real home (though no one is currently living in it). Chic and eco-friendly, this home is brimming with cool design elements and gadgets: A home automation system monitors energy usage by appliance, a wind turbine generates energy, a Cybertecture Mirror in the Master Bath displays the weather and monitors your weight, and many of the furnishings are reclaimed (University of Chicago laboratory cabinets were refurbished to serve as kitchen cabinetry).  This year’s exhibit has been designed with a couple and their two sons in mind, courtesy of Chicago interior furnishing store, Scout.

I brought my son, age 11, to visit the Smart Home and he was fascinated by the cool tech elements. The 20-minute guided tour, geared towards both kids and parents, taught both of us a thing or two about sustainability and how science is used to make homes smarter and greener. Be forewarned that afterwards your kids will be begging you to install some of these amazing updates in your own home. Though we’re not quite ready to install a wind turbine in our Chicago backyard, I did gain some native plant gardening inspiration from the sustainable garden.

This exhibit requires an extra ticket fee: $8 adults/seniors; $2 children (3-11). Tour times vary, but the final tour of the day is at 1:30 p.m.
