While most of the GLBT scene seems to be located in the Boystown and Andersonville neighborhoods, venture a bit further north to the corner of Devon Ave. and Clark St. to hit up Parlour, which is located right on the border of the Edgewater and East Rogers Park neighborhoods. This fledgling bar just had it’s first birthday and so far it seems to have been able to hold its own. I’ve been making visits here since it first opened and have seen it grow and create its own identity.
With the interior of exposed brick and dim, yet classy lighting, this place is great for folks who want to grab a drink and chat with friends or meet new ones. Make sure to check out the walls, as the art that hangs from them feature local artists and is known to change frequently. If you like what you see, they are for sale. The population of the bar is also known to change in waves: friends grabbing drinks after dinner to those just warming up before heading across the street to Jackhammer or Touche.
Parlour has done a great job giving back to the community, often times holding benefits for local and national charities and non-profit organizations. There are also theme nights which are worth checking out. Kick off the weekend with Lipstick Fridays where the ladies mingle after the long work week. Northern Lights, which is billed as a queer performance and dance party brings laughs and beats every last Saturday of the month. If you’re not ready for the weekend to end, belt it out on Sunday Fundays which features karaoke.
Parlour is located at 6341 N. Clark St. just south of Devon Ave. Some events do charge a small cover, so make sure to check their website to see what’s going on.
