Sports Agent Celebrates One Year of Social Media-Based Charity

Just before the 2010-11 NHL season, there was a buzz on Twitter. Yes, the usual chatter was happening about the coming season, but it was something that was going on off the ice that started to grab the attention of players and fans.

Agent Scott Norton, owner of Norton Sports, began tweeting through his twitter account – @NortonSports – simple instances of him doing something for someone else on Mondays. He attached the hashtag #MMDM to the posts, and encouraged his clients to do the same.

As time passed, more and more people began jumping on the bandwagon. No longer was it only Norton and his clients, but complete strangers were telling their stories about random acts of kindness by tweeting with the #MMDM hashtag attached.

On Monday night, Norton will host a first anniversary party to celebrate the growth of the Make My Day Monday movement at Public House (400 N. State in Chicago) from 6-9 P.M. There will be great raffle prizes, including signed items from Chicago athletes.

Norton represents some notable NHL players, including LA Kings captain Dustin Brown.

Since the humble beginnings of the movement, Norton has since launched a website, Twitter account and Facebook page for MMDM. Norton has also hosted parties across the country to benefit a number of charities, and has gained national attention for MMDM. The movement has been featured on Forbes.com and NHL Live, and continues to grow.

“It has grown by leaps and bounds, and has far exceeded my expectations,” said Norton. “It is so rewarding to see the acts of kindness done each and every Monday.”

The anniversary party will benefit Girls on the Run. The impact has been incredible in the first year.

“In live events in Chicago, we have raised close to $20,000 for various charities around the city,” Norton said. “Thru twitter, this number grows exponentially from my recent effort for mental illness to Dustin Brown’s effort last year for Tsunami victims in Japan!”

As Norton looks ahead, he obviously has work to do representing his various clients. But a continued focus on doing the right thing remains central to his mission, and he hopes MMDM can continue growing.

“I really would like to see it spread to our children and schools so that our future is raised with the idea of helping each other,” he said. Norton also noted that he continues planning events all over the country.
