Roamin’ in Ravenswood

Montrose Avenue in the Ravenswood neighborhood is crawling with shops and eateries. A friend of mine visited last weekend, so we decided to spend the sunny afternoon exploring this North side neighborhood off the Montrose Brown line stop.

If you’re looking for a unique gift or are in the mood to spoil yourself, check out Hazel’s two charming Ravenswood boutiques. If you’re like me, you’ll get lost in the greeting card aisle and find yourself laughing out loud at the clever cards. You’ll also love the eclectic jewelry designed by artists from across the country. I picked up a vintage camera charm necklace for a wanderlusting friend. Other specialty items fill the store making every nook and cranny worth exploring.

And don’t miss Hazel Apparel just west of the accessories shop for men’s and women’s clothing and jewelry.

Margie’s Candies (1813 W Montrose Ave)

This legendary candy store and ice cream parlor first opened in Chicago’s Bucktown neighborhood (1960 N Western Ave) in the 1920s. The sweet shop has seen all sorts of famous faces throughout the years, including Al Capone, who allegedly patronized the sweet shop during its early years and the Beatles who indulged in sundaes after a concert at Comiskey Park in the 60s.

Needless to say, if you’ve got a sweet tooth, Margie’s is a must!

The north side got lucky when the family opened a second location in Ravenswood in 2005. From milkshakes and banana splits to sweets like toffee and fudge, you’ll satisfy your craving at this quaint neighborhood shop. Do yourself a favor and try the hot fudge. I can’t get enough!

nadeau (4433 N Ravenswood Ave)

Looking for the perfect end table or replacement for that old coffee table? Nadeau offers unique, handcrafted and affordable furniture. Or as founders Tom and Ryoko Nadeau say, “Furniture with a Soul”. Each piece of furniture is handcrafted, solid wood at low, wholesale prices. Inventory is always changing so you never know what you might find! Note: They can’t ship to your house, so if you want to buy, be sure bring a vehicle with space. Or just browse for inspiration!

This neighborhood hot spot is the type of place you want to become a regular at. As soon as you walk in to Fountainhead, you feel at home. It’s warm and cozy, rich wood interiors and delicious smells from the kitchen are extremely inviting, not to mention the bar is full of craft and small batch beer, whiskey in all varieties, and craft spirits and wines from all around the world.

Scotch ale braised pork shoulder sandwich…seared scallops with bacon risotto…Mac & Cheese with pulled duck confit…are you drooling yet? Come for lunch, dinner, Sunday brunch or just drinks. It’s the perfect place to pass the time.
